Dr Kim Torney will
be the guest speaker at April's Heidelberg Historical Society Meeting. Her book examines the ways in which the compelling image of a child lost in
the Australian bush became absorbed into the developing colonial culture of
European settlers.
It is an image which still resonates today
and, along with bush fires and floods, is one of the few experiences
contemporary Australians share with their colonial past. In her quest to
understand the development of the image, Kim explores the domestic lives of
Australian settlers, changing societal attitudes towards childhood and
children, as well as the often- fraught relationship between Aborigines and
Europeans. She will also discuss some specific links between Heidelberg and the
image of children lost in the bush.
Dr Torney wull speak at the Tuesday April 8 meeting at the Uniting Church Community Centre, Seddon Street Ivanhoe at 8pm. All welcome.
